Shukrani donates a computer set to Luanda Prison
A giving hand is a blessed hand so the saying goes, the college made a computer donation to the prison after a noting the problem that the prison was facing when storing and processing information especially that of inmates. The ceremony took place at the college's premises in Soweto area in the city of Mbeya. The college, being a good corporate citzen, made this timely donation to alliviate some of the problems that were being faced by the prison.
Speaking during the handover coremony, the college Principal, Major Christine Watson said that the college decided to help the prison since as a christian organisation the college realises that it is more blessing to give than to recieve. she added that many people from differnt parts of the world have been assisting the college in many ways and saw it wise to also help other organisations that are in need. She further narrated that she was deeply touched with lack of computers at the prison as well as the plight of inmates whose information was being processed slowly and was at risk of being lost or damaged. This would have a great repurcation as a person will risk continue being in jail even after the end of their prison sentence since its hard to trace data from files especially when there are many files or people would fail to appeal against their sentances due to late submission of the grounds their appeals to a superior court.
She also thanked Mr Malima of CCJP for making the college aware of the need and asked prison authorities to contact the college if there is any problem with the computer use and said that the college will be more than willing to help with its computer experts.
She then asked government and other organisations to help the prison with things such as printers etc and on training especially in data management to prison officers. She then urged the prison authorities to put the computer into good use and that, when used properly, it would tremendously reduce the administrative burden especially when storing and retrieving information.
The principal added that apart from donating the computer, the college is also actively involved in helping other disadvantaged groups by iner-alia giving out accademic scholarships to the needy and disabled people. The college is doing these activities to complement government efforts in reducing poverty in the country which is in line with the United Nations Millenium Development Goals declaration which seeks to reduce poverty.
Speaking at the same function, the Officer in Charge of the prison thanked Shukrani college for the timely donation. He further said that the prison is facing alot of problems in its operations due to among other things lack of adequate funding. He then challenged other well wishers to come forward and help as the prison.
Taking his turn, a representative of Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace for Mbeya Diocese, Mr Malima thanked the college for thetimely donation and say it will go a long way in solving some of the challenges that the prison and prisoners were facing like delays in processing and doccumentation for the appeals since the prison was using typewriters.
He also concured with the college principal and the prison authorities that the computer will further speed up procesing, doccumentation and ease record keeping for the prison and prisoners.
He futher asked Shukrani and other organisations to assist the prison with teaching materials for primary and secondary schools since prisons will be able to take its rightfull place as a reformatory centre if people are being reformed by iner alia training them in different fields so that when they go back to the communuties they should be useful, prodctive and responsible citizens who will actively participate in the development of the country. He also metioned medical equipments as another chcallenge being faced by the prison.
He also asked the communities to change their mindset torwards prisoners and ex-prisoners by accepting them back into their communities and help them intergrate into the commuties as they have the right to live as granted by the United Republican Consititution.
